Some things to remember if you are on the roads this Easter
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Easter road trips are the best, whether you're enjoying a staycation or heading out of town. Here’s a handy checklist to help you pack.

The Easter long weekend is almost here, and there’s nothing better than spending it with friends and family.
While the holiday brings excitement and visitors to our beautiful province, it also calls for a bit of planning, especially if you're hitting the road.
Road trips with the family aren’t just spontaneous adventures; a little preparation goes a long way.
So, if you’re heading out soon, here’s a quick checklist to help make your trip safe and stress-free.
1. Safety first
Before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle is road-trip ready – whether you’re heading near or far.
-
Check your tyre pressure and tread.
-
Top up your oil and water.
-
Ensure all lights, indicators, and wiper blades are working properly.
-
Don’t forget to test your demister and aircon, especially if you're expecting wet weather.
And of course, stick to the speed limit, buckle up, and drive responsibly.
2. Be prepared
If you're travelling with kids, pack car-friendly activities like books, games, and writing tablets to keep them entertained because let’s be honest, they're not likely to nap the whole way.
Plan your estimated departure time and factor in regular bathroom and stretch breaks. If possible, rotate drivers to avoid fatigue – long trips are no fun when one person is doing all the work.
Also, calculate toll fees ahead of time and keep cash or your payment method ready to avoid delays at tollgates.
3. Pack food and snacks
While you can always stop for a bite, having food and water in the car saves time and can be a lifesaver when hunger strikes between towns.
Choose non-perishable, travel-friendly snacks and keep a stash of water for everyone. Include a mix of healthy options to avoid sugar highs (and crashes), especially for the kids.

4. Pack your essentials
Make sure you've packed everything you might need on your trip. Here’s a quick checklist to guide you:
Comfy travel outfit and one nice outfit
Weather-ready layers: coats, jerseys or jackets
Pajamas, toothbrush and toothpaste
Pillow (especially if you're a fussy sleeper)
Walking shoes, and sandals or flip-flops
Extra socks and underwear
Toiletries: sunblock, face cream and deodorant
Medication: painkillers, chronic meds, vitamins, motion sickness tablets and a mini first aid kit
5. Other essentials
Before you head out, make sure you’ve got the important stuff:
-
Valid ID and driver’s licence
-
Car licence disc clearly displayed
-
Wallet with some cash (just in case)
-
Phone charger (car and wall plug)
-
Mobile data or a dongle, and download Google Maps for offline use
Don't forget to share your travel plans with a loved one so they can track you in an emergency.
When leaving your home, shut the water mains off, switch your geyser off, and ensure all electrical items are unplugged.
