Rory Petzer on completing his second Comrades Marathon
Updated | By East Coast Radio/ Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
As an avid runner, it only made sense that our very own Producer Rory would give it a go again...
"I simply had to come back a third time to finally get my revenge!"
We are absolutely beaming with pride that our very own Producer Rory completed the Comrades Marathon this year.
Knowing that he didn't give up and powered through to achieve one of his goals, is the epitome of what we stand for as a show.
We asked him a few questions about the marathon:
Why the Comrades?
"Having successfully completed my first Comrades Marathon in 2019 and then not finishing the next two in a row, I simply had to come back a third time to finally get my revenge! But in saying that, and as a result of those two, there was obviously lot of pressure on me to actually finish it this year!"
What has the experience taught you?
"The biggest difference this year is that I actively sought out as much advice as possible from every single person I knew that had completed the Comrades Marathon.
"I asked about everything including nutrition on the road (because that had always been a problem for me), pacing myself, what to drink and how often to drink it and even the best remedies for cramps! I learned that training is important, but what is just as important is to ask the people around me for advice.
"I also learned that the Comrades Marathon is there to be respected and every decision you make out on the road affects how and if you finish!"

It being Thankful Tuesday, why are you thankful for making the decision to run again this year?
"Really thankful I made the decision to return this year as it would’ve bothered me forever if I let this beautiful race get the better of me! I’ll be back for the uprun next year!"
As a team, we are elated that Producer Rory had the courage to attempt the Comrades again, even after not completing it two years in a row. He didn't let that stop him. We are thankful for him!
Thank you, Rory Petzer, for teaching us what it means to push through, and if something doesn't work out the first time, or the second time, to find a new way of approaching it.
