Pizza in bread, is this a thing we didn't know about?
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
We've seen some strange food combinations, but this one seems to be a true dedication to carbs.

It’s safe to say that pizza is a favourite meal for most people, no matter the day of the week. But since it’s not always an option, it often becomes a top pick for "cheat day" – whether that means indulging in extra carbs or simply skipping the hassle of cooking.
However, a group of friends recently introduced us to a bizarre food combination that might make more sense than we’d like to admit.
We’ve seen unusual pairings like fish fingers with custard and even a spring onion latte, but now it seems the younger generation has taken their love for carbs – especially bread – to a whole new level.
We stumbled upon a TikTok video of a young man casually buttering two slices of bread, seemingly preparing a simple sandwich. The confusing part? A box of pizza sat right in front of him.
Naturally, we wondered – why choose buttered bread (a beloved staple in many South African households) when there's pizza on the table?
But then came the twist: he took a slice of pizza and sandwiched it between the buttered bread.
Curious about this carb-loaded creation, we asked a colleague from the Breakfast team, who admitted, "The crazy part is, I've actually had friends who do this. We'll order a triple-decker pizza, and they'll take four slices of bread, butter it up, and put the pizza in between. A friend of mine actually told me to do that with a pie! Apparently, it's nothing new."
It seems we have been living under a rock.
Nevertheless, we call this a true commitment to carbs, which we can get behind on a cheat day. Who said, buttered bread was only for dipping in tea...
