Perpetrators steal water pipe in Umhlanga in broad daylight
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Theft at any time of the day is never acceptable but this just feels so wrong on so many levels...

We often think of them as small-time criminals, but the impact they leave behind – both in damage and trauma – is anything but minor. Copper and steel thieves are a persistent nuisance.
In KZN, these crimes are rampant. No neighbourhood in Durban can confidently claim to be untouched by petty copper or steel theft.
For these thieves, it’s an easy way to make quick cash. They work so swiftly and efficiently that you’d swear they were trained plumbers – no offence to actual plumbers.
A video circulating on social media and community WhatsApp groups shows two men removing a water pipe from a building, reportedly in Umhlanga.
Dressed in plain clothes with no official uniform, the pair appear suspicious. Their hurried actions and quick escape suggest they were stealing the large steel pipe, part of a hose line – though this has yet to be confirmed.
Some individuals (insert appropriate term for foolish troublemaker here) never fail to surprise us with their bold crimes. Umhlanga has typically been off-limits for this kind of theft, but times are changing, and criminals are becoming more brazen.
Many community members argue that metal scrapyards should be held accountable for fuelling the demand. After all, if no one was buying stolen metal, these crimes wouldn’t be so rampant.
