Due to a major leak affecting three pumps from Northdene to Shallcross reservoir, some areas will be left without water for seven days. We thought it was the best time to highlight some of the ways we waste water without knowing...
Water is everything. Many who go without water for days or are living in less than basic amenity standards will understand this. When it is given to us in abundance, when you open the tap and just get a free flow of water, sometimes we don't fully acknowledge the importance of this liquid in our lives.
The eThekwini Municipality announced that there would be water cuts in several areas that are serviced by the Shallcross reservoir. A major leak on a 750mm rising main from Northdene 3 pumps to Shallcross reservoir has been noted and therefore several areas in Shallcross, Pinetown, and Klaarwater would be affected.
According to the source, the water leak is already being worked on and alternate measures have been put into place for the residents that have been affected.
The following areas will be affected with water outages:
Parts of Shallcross, Klaarwater, St Wendolins, Washington Heights, Parts of Nagina, Intake, Mawelewele, Welbedacht West, Luganda, Parts of Marianhill and, Parts of Queensburgh.
While these areas are impacted by either intermittent supply or poor pressure:
Umlazi- F,G,H,P,N,W and CC sections, Folweni, Nsimbini, Golokodo, Verulam, Ntuzuma and, Inanda. (The South African)
When we saw this, we thought it was important to revisit a topic that many of us don't follow strictly. When we experience water shortages, we realise the importance that water has in our lives.
We wanted to highlight some ways that we waste water and maybe don't really know we are. Perhaps by shining some light on these ways, we can become more aware and become more conscious of saving water. Let's choose to be more eco-friendly.
- If you have a dishwasher at home, don't run it until it is full. If you are in the market for a new dishwasher, invest in an Energy Star or other energy efficient dishwasher.
- When brushing your teeth and/or washing dishes and even showering, don't leave the water running, when you are busy washing there is no need for the water to be left running.
- For those that shave, fill the sink up or a bucket with water and use that to clean your blade, instead of leaving the tap running.
- If you are washing your car, do it over your grass so that you are watering your grass while cleaning your vehicle. Use biodegradable soap and a bucket of water instead of letting the hose run. You can use the hose for your final rinse.
- Make sure that you tend to leaky faucets and toilets, a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a DAY.
- Don't use your toilet as a garbage bin, make sure to dispose of things in the rubbish bin and not in the toilet.
- We know it's cold but try to only use hot water when absolutely needed. Hot water uses much more energy and isn't always necessary. (Greenscream Blog)
We hope that you will change your ways of using water and become more eco-friendly. To those affected by the water outages, make sure to look out for the water tankers in your areas.
