PARENTING: From wholesome and culturally-apt Dolls to inappropriately dressed ones...

Do you monitor what toys your kids play with?
We recently highlighted a collection of dolls that were inspired by a mother's need to show her daughter that dolls look like her too. Nandikwa Dolls was created by Mmule Ramothibe, who has tried her best to represent the diverse African cultures of South Africa.
And the truth is when it comes to dolls and other types of toys, it is so important for us as parents to make sure that we are aware of what our kids are playing with. The importance runs deep as it is indicative of how they play and how what they see impacts them as individuals.
On that note, as we are here celebrating our modest looking (but very stylish) South African dolls, we see a parent who shared their concerns on TikTok about inappropriately dressed dolls.
A father shared a video of some wholesome looking dolls that he would like his daughter to play with. The dolls were inspired by the Disney characters from 'Frozen' and 'The Princess and the Frog'.
But his daughter didn't want these wholesome dolls, she wanted the LOL Surprise Dolls, and we have to admit that what he showed in comparison did seem worlds apart.

After watching the video, it shows a doll dressed quite inappropriately - almost like an extreme version of Betty Boop, and we can understand his fear in allowing his kid to play with this doll.
But we took a look at the LOL Surprise Dolls Instagram page and we saw dolls that were quite cute and hip in their wardrobe. Their ranges were inclusive in terms of ethnicity and also stylish. But we do get where this father is coming from, as the dolls he shows on the video should be X-rated.
"The four dolls were dressed in fish nets and underwear with their stomachs or legs showing. In addition to the clothing they came in, the four-pack included extra clip-on clothing pieces that didn’t provide more coverage." (Daily Dot)
