PARENTING: A five-year-old beats up his teacher in a fit of rage...
Updated | By East Coast Radio
A knock into reality when it comes to the length a tantrum can take...
Amidst the varying amount of things that parents have to be concerned with, violent behaviour at school shouldn't be high up on the list. Just the thought of your kid getting involved in any sort of physical altercation can leave any parent feeling nauseous.
When we read the headline about this story of a five-year-old who beat his teacher unconscious, it immediately sent a number of thoughts beaming through our minds. Some of which were scary, others leaving us with a sense of defeat.
Constantly, we question every decision, every word, every response when it comes to parenting. This is out of fear that we may be impacting our children in a negative way. Perhaps even scaring them or causing them to behave a certain way.
And the truth is that being a conscious parent, isn't always enough. It takes a level of succumbing to the fact that sometimes our children's actions are not a reflection on our parenting, but rather something that runs deeper, something that isn't always in our control.
Which brings us to the story about a five-year-old from Pines Lakes Elementary in Pembroke Pines, about 35km north of Miami.
"According to a report by News.com.au two boys aged five and four were throwing things around their classroom and flipping chairs when their teacher decided to take the five-year-old boy to the school “cool down room” to try and diffuse the situation." (MSN)
Once in the cool room, things turned violent. The five-year-old started punching and physically assaulting the teacher. This continued to a point where the teacher passed out and was found by a fellow teacher.

The teacher was taken to the hospital for treatment and evaluation. Parents from the community shared their concern surrounding the incident. It was then revealed that this was in fact a special needs school.
One parent shared that this was not the first time an incident like this occurred at the school.
This is a special needs class, however, they’re not equipped to deal with things like this. Somebody needs to be held accountable, the parents need to be held accountable, the district needs to be held accountable, they dropped the ball.- A parent from the community
The spokesperson from the authorities indicated that it was highly unlikely that the young boy would be facing any charges. The reason behind this was that he was under the age of reasoning.
Whatever the discourse from this case, we hope that the community rallies together to address this with the school. Perhaps there needs to be proper training on how to handle these kinds of situations?
