OPINION: Does pizza motivate you more than a cash bonus?
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Say whaattttt now?!
Everybody loves pizza, and if you don't then we're sorry to hear that.
But when it comes to choosing between the cheesy crusty goodness and cold, hard cash, we think that the majority of us would choose the money.
A study that was conducted in 2016 by behavioural economist Dan Ariely has once again gained some traction online - and lets just say it has not been received in the most positive way by social media users.
"The study testing three ways of motivating workers against a control group that was not offered an incentive. Pizza, a complimentary text from the boss, and about $30 cash were the three incentives, and pizza came in just behind the “Well done!” text from the boss, with cash doing the worst. Or so Ariely said." (Daily Kos)
Just hearing those findings sounds pretty unbelievable, but we have had to change our mindsets to another frame of mind. A mindset that didn't have the pandemic, the war, and the aftermath of everything that we have all had to deal with.
A mindset that wasn't dictated by money, but more about feeling appreciated and valued. Ironically enough, this is what many workers have yearned for, but never received.
But what's even more crazy is that Ariely was not the most trustworthy source when it came to studies. Therefore we cannot jump the gun here and assume that his findings were correct.
"In 2021, Ariely had to retract a different study—one on honesty—because of fake data. So that’s one grain of salt to add to your reading of his pizza study." (Daily Kos)
Nevertheless, as an image of the headline started making its rounds on social media, it seems outside of Ariely's supposed popular opinion, not many people are in agreement.

In the times we live in, it isn't just about making your workers feel valued with pizza. Yes, it certainly does add to the sense of community that comes with working with a team, but historically money is king and queen.
