Many people empathise with the ongoing water woes experienced by KZN residents. It’s difficult to imagine how some communities have managed without access to running water for extended periods.

Water is a basic necessity that no one should have to go without.

Unfortunately, infrastructure challenges remain a pressing issue in both our province and country.

While the relevant authorities are working to address these concerns, we can all do our part by using water wisely and conserving wherever possible.

For those without access to water – and without the luxury of high-tech solutions – we’ve discovered a simple yet effective hack to help make daily life a little easier.

To mimic the ease of running water, we found a camping hack that uses a five-litre bottle and a straw to help you create a makeshift tap.

This simple yet effective method helps conserve water when washing your hands or rinsing food.

In the video, the camper heats a small piece of wood to create a hole in a sealed five-litre water bottle filled with water. He then inserts a straw into the hole.

When the bottle is flipped upright, the water stays inside due to air pressure, preventing leaks.
