KZN dog trainer explains why dogs dig

Having your dog tear up your well-kept garden is frustrating, especially when you've put effort into landscaping. Understanding why they dig is the first step to stopping it.

The relentless heat has everyone feeling cranky. It's been so unbearable that some people struggle to sleep, eat, or even find relief.

But if you think that's bad, imagine how much worse it is for your pet – feeling the discomfort tenfold yet unable to voice it.

While complaining about the weather won’t change it, understanding how it affects your furry friends can help.

Swift K9 Services, a KZN-based specialist dog training, breeding, and dog supplies company, has been using social media to share advice with pet owners on training their dogs.

More than that, they have been providing some key insight into our furry family members, and the people of KZN are here for it.

In a recent video, Credance Boucher shed light on one of the main reasons dogs dig – something that many pet owners find frustrating, especially when it ruins a well-kept garden.

If you're tired of discovering unexpected holes, his advice on curbing this behaviour might be just what you need.

Boucher explains that dogs dig for various reasons. Some do it instinctively, others out of boredom or a lack of stimulation, and some even dig to bury or protect valuable items like toys or bones.

But one often-overlooked reason, especially in the sweltering KZN heat, is that dogs dig to cool themselves down.

The earth beneath the surface is naturally cooler, providing much-needed relief from the soaring temperatures.
