The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) led a prison raid this past Wednesday, 24 July 2024, at the Johannesburg Prison, aka Sun City.

In a bid to clamp down on smuggling contraband into prisons, the DCS and the police at the Johannesburg Prison decided to start in their home first.

The reason for the raid came after inmates were found in "possession of hundreds of illegal items, including cellphones, contraband, weapons, and even TVs during the raid".

Samuel Thobakgale, the Correctional Services National Commissioner, said: "There’s a unit manager who now needs to account for what we found here. Movements to court, movements to hospitals, and even movements inside the centre. These movements are the ones that provide an opportunity for these contrabands to be exchanged." (EWN)

It was shocking to see what the officials found in the inmates' belongings, but it isn't surprising, considering we have seen prisoners share videos on TikTok. Whether or not these were legitimately shared from prisons cannot be confirmed, but the discovery of these makes one wonder.

Sun City houses more than 10,000 inmates and is overcrowded, therefore it is essential for them to tighten security around movement and "combat illegal activities in the correctional system".
