There are many ways to deal with unwanted pests and animals in your home or garden. In KZN, snakes, monkeys, ants, flies, mosquitoes and cockroaches are among the most annoying unwanted visitors.

From hiring exterminators and snake catchers to using pesticides or age-old natural remedies, people go to great lengths to keep these pests at bay – sometimes in surprisingly creative ways.

Of course, not everyone can be as creative as the San Antonio Zoo, which lets people name pests before feeding them to the animals.

While we can't all take such an unconventional approach, a recent video on social media revealed how hotels in Mexico tackle their own pest problem – pigeons disrupting the hospitality industry.

Using falconers to keep pigeons away is not only an effective strategy for hotels and resorts in Cancún, Mexico, but it also doubles as an unexpected attraction for guests.

As an Instagram post explained: "Pigeons can be a nuisance, leaving droppings on balconies, pool areas, and outdoor dining spaces. Instead of using nets or other deterrents, hotels hire falconers to fly hawks around the premises. The presence of a predator naturally scares the pigeons, encouraging them to stay away without harming them."

Watching the falconer launch the bird into the air was almost like watching an athlete throw a shot put.
