Guy shows us what he can eat in a day with R30
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
We admire this young man's determination to make R30 a day work for his meals. However, many social media users pointed out that he could have stretched his budget further by shopping at more affordable retailers.

Retailers like Woolworths and Pick n Pay were the first to market meals based on price and number of people. For example, they would say, "Meal for four – under R150."
Families welcomed the idea, many realising they needed something like
this without even knowing it. These meal options not only inspired new
ideas but also helped them budget better.
Enter young content creator Darvin Kinzel, who decided to document his journey of surviving with just R30 a day for five days. Essentially, he used R30 a day to buy food that would be consumed each day.

It's interesting to see the choices he made – leaning more towards snack foods than wholesome meals. His approach to this social experiment was also quite limited, as he didn’t explore a wide range of shopping options.
Instead, he focused on Pick n Pay and Woolworths – stores not typically
associated with budget-friendly grocery shopping. Yet, surprisingly he
stretched his R30 budget to buy three to four items at both retailers.
Throughout the five-day challenge, Kinzel shopped at Pick n Pay,
Woolworths and even a petrol garage shop, showing the varying degrees of
affordability.

Social media users piped in with advice, many saying he could've done better if he had shopped elsewhere.
One person mentioned Kara Nichhas, a popular KZN-based store that offers a 100% vegetarian menu to patrons while also providing a cost-effective approach to meals.
Here are some of the suggestions people shared:
"You could get a lot more if you use R210 for 7 days than with R30/day. For bread, it is R15, and you get around 20 slices, which is cheaper than the bun. The same goes for pasta, which is cheaper than noodles."
"Hun, that's not real food. Please ask a mom close to you for help. Instead of 30 a day, take the week's money and get proper food divided into days."
"I love how my South Africans are giving him cheaper advice. Hai, we know how to survive, sana."
"Shoprite got Sandwiches, Beans and Pap for R5 here in eThekwini."
