Flight attendant loses job after posting a twerking video

Breaking the rules at work – accidentally or intentionally – can sometimes have serious consequences.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you unknowingly (or knowingly) went against company policy and risked your job?

Let’s be honest – most people have bent the rules at some point, whether minor or major, and walked away with nothing more than a warning or a tense dispute hearing.

As the saying goes, once bitten, twice shy, which means after a close call, you’re likely to tread more carefully.

But here’s the reality: not everyone actually reads their company’s policies. Sure, it’s mandatory, but for many, those policies fade the moment they settle into their role, operating on autopilot after passing their probation.

Nelle Diala, a flight attendant, was fired because she didn't familiarise herself with her airline's social media policy. Without thinking, she shared a video of herself twerking and dancing in the aisle of an empty Alaskan Airlines aircraft.

She had no ill intentions when making the video – it was just a simple way to start her day on a positive note and celebrate completing her six-month probation.

But things took an unexpected turn when the video went viral on TikTok. She was called in and fired for violating the airline’s social media policy.

Her story sparked a discussion with Carol Ofori and the team, who turned to KZN to ask: have you ever done something at work that cost you your job?
