Family in India woken up by lioness in their kitchen
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
We thought monkeys were a handful – turns out, they’ve got nothing on the lions in India.

After hearing about this family’s late-night visitor, we’re suddenly grateful it’s only monkeys raiding our kitchens.
At around 1 am in Kovaya village, India, a lioness wandered into a family’s home looking for food. It headed straight for the kitchen, waking the household with the noise.
At first, they thought it was just a cat. And technically, they were right – except it was not the kind they expected.
According to Times India, "The lion squeezed in between the kitchen wall and the rafters. The startled residents shone torches at the animal and shot videos on their phones."
Villagers were told to stay calm, move slowly, and avoid loud noises – anything sudden could’ve triggered the lioness to attack.
Forest officials were called and helped safely remove the lioness from the home.
Sightings like this aren’t unusual in the area. The village is close to forests and the coast, so lions sometimes wander in.
Jayen Patel, deputy conservator of forests, said: "This lion belongs to a pride of six lions. They are currently near Jafrabad and occasionally venture into villages searching for prey, especially when they do not find stray livestock. Such incidents are extremely rare."
