Durbanite reminds us that women can open jars too
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Gone are the days when a woman needed a man to open a jar of mayonnaise for her.

We live in a society where men are often factored into women’s daily responsibilities more than necessary. While men play valuable roles in our communities, women shouldn’t feel like they can’t do something without them.
Durban content creator The Real Deels recently shared a video that reminds us that women are more than capable of handling things themselves. Sometimes, the challenge isn’t just doing it – it’s convincing older women, who grew up in a different time, that a man isn’t always needed in the house.
In her video, she recounted how her elderly female neighbour came over to ask for a favour. And, of course, being a good neighbour means lending a helping hand…
The "old lady," as she referred to her neighbour, asked if Deels could get her husband to do a task often stereotypically assigned to men – opening a jar lid (in this case, a jar of mayonnaise).
Of course, being the independent woman she is, Deels effortlessly opened the jar for the elderly neighbour – then followed it up with a clip of herself gracefully spinning on her dance pole.
Message received loud and clear: if she had the core strength to twirl around a pole, a mayonnaise jar lid was never going to stand a chance.
While the old-fashioned notion that women need men for simple tasks has mostly faded, some couples still play into the stereotype for a laugh.

We caught up with Deels to get her take on gender stereotypes – particularly the long-standing notion that women need men to open jar lids.
This moment was a fun reminder that women are more capable than outdated stereotypes suggest – even though we might playfully act otherwise when our partners are around! Strength isn’t defined by gender; sometimes, it’s just about showing up for each other in small but meaningful ways. It’s less about who opens the jar and more about breaking the idea that certain tasks belong to one gender.- Deels
