Durban traffic: Things motorists do when they see traffic

Durban traffic: Things motorists do when they see traffic

This is an example of what not to do if you get stuck in traffic this Easter weekend...

The Road Accident Fund reported that 2024 was the deadliest Easter on the roads since 2019.

According to East Coast Radio, the leading causes of the crashes were “human error, vehicle failure, and environmental factors”.

Anyone who’s driven during peak travel periods knows how chaotic things can get. When the roads are packed, logic and lawfulness often take a back seat.

One TikTok video captured this perfectly, showing just how wild things can get, especially on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads.

It’s not like we haven’t seen this kind of reckless driving before, but this time, we’re urging motorists to stop normalising it.

No matter how late you are for a meeting or event, following the rules of the road isn’t optional.

In the video, several cars are seen reversing up a ramp to avoid traffic on the N2 Northbound. The person filming even laughs, saying it’s what “everyone” does when there's a jam.

But here’s the thing: it’s illegal, dangerous, and just not worth the risk.

As one person put it, "Bruh, traffic is like a max of 5- 10 minutes in Durban. Most cars are auto… I’ve seen too many people reverse and cause accidents."

And from a Capetonian: "In Cape Town, you'd get pulled over by the ghost squad immediately or get fined later by the hidden surveillance.

Please note that we do not encourage this behaviour on the roads.

Stay safe out there this Easter weekend.
