Social media has given us a window into the lives of many interracial couples, and one pairing that’s caught a lot of attention lately is Americans married to South Africans.

Theo Iyer recently sparked some confusion online. Although he proudly identifies as South African, he speaks with a distinctly American accent.

He explains that he was born in South Africa but moved to the United States with his parents when he was just four years old.

Iyer also shares that his family has lived in South Africa for five generations. Even though he holds dual citizenship, he still considers himself 100% South African.

Watch his video from TikTok, in which he briefly explains his story.

Iyer recently married his Italian-American wife in Cape Town, and he’s been posting some entertaining videos of her trying South African Indian food.

One video that really stands out features his grandmother introducing a spread of traditional vegetarian dishes, many of which are well-known in South African Indian households.

His wife, Elissa, was polite and open-minded, accepting every curry that came her way. But it was clear from her reactions that the flavours were a bit of a culture shock.

The highlight? A clip that shows her bravely attempting a Durban mutton bunny chow and completely losing the battle.

The video sparked a wave of nostalgia, with people sharing their memories.

Many recognised his grandmother instantly, affectionately calling her “Iyer Aunty” or “Aunty Mummy”.

  • "That's her love language... she loved feeding u guys."

  • "This is so amazing, miss my grandma and mom so much, you're blessed."

  • "Sour herbs, dhall just slaps on another level."

  • "This is so wholesome."

  • "Please, can your grandmother start a TikTok page! Durban feeds my soooouuuulll."

  • "Dude, your granny is a legend... top chows... Sour herbs dhall just does it Bru..."
