Durban-born fashion designer Sibu Msimang threads inspiration
Updated | By East Coast Radio
"One morning I got hold of a book called, 'Do It, a guide to living your
dreams'. That's the book that inspired me to go and study Fashion Design," says Sibu Msimang.
Durban-born fashion designer Sibu Msimang isn't just a talented designer, but she is also a qualified chef.
It's not the most likely of matches but food and fashion aren't that far off from one another. Both niches focus on creating something that appeals to the eye.
Msimang started in the food industry after she matriculated when she worked at The Royal Hotel and trained as a chef. She is a professional chef who also follows a banting lifestyle and shares her meals on her Instagram page.
Sibu Msimang's career spans almost two decades and her stunning work has been showcased in several local and international fashion shows.
The Sibu Msimang name is associated with exceptional workmanship and edgy style. Her work has been seen at several Durban Julys over the years and there certainly is a racy appeal over her garments.
Her clothing has also been stocked at various outlets countrywide, namely Edgars, Burgundy Fly, and The Space.
She currently stocks her signature clothing at The Fifth, a boutique located in Glenwood, Durban in which she is also a shareholder of the business.
Msimang thoroughly enjoys teaching others how to sew with her basic sewing classes. A true testament to her passion for sewing and design.
Opening up the Sibu Msimang Boutique and owning a restaurant is part of her plans.
After Matric I trained at the Royal Hotel as a chef for three years and qualified as a chef. I then got a job as an assistant supervisor at a Lodge in Montclair. I used to start work at 10am, so I'd always go to the Municipal Library at the City Hall before work to read. One morning I got hold of a book called, 'Do It, A Guide to Living Your Dreams'. That's the book that inspired me to go and study Fashion Design. I do catering for smaller events, my favourite being picnic setups. When I'm not at work I'm probably out restaurant hopping with friends. I also enjoy quiet time at home. I am currently supporting an orphanage in Umlazi, trying to get sponsorships/donations for food, clothing, and more.- Sibu Msimang
