Durban book lovers, it's time to help StreetLit Booksellers

The StreetLit Booksellers are urging book lovers to buy a book and help them reach their 2025 target.

With great passion and respect for the late Tata Madiba, Durbanites came together last Mandela Day to donate 10,052 books – one for each day Nelson Mandela spent in prison.

While the number was remarkable, it was the shared love of storytelling that truly united Durban’s book-loving community for a meaningful cause.

This year, StreetLit Booksellers, known for selling pre-loved books, has set a new goal. Instead of collecting donations, they’re encouraging book lovers to support their initiative by buying books from their stalls and adding a new addition to their personal libraries.

The StreetLit Bookseller community is truly special, with each vendor carrying a unique story of resilience.

Made up of individuals who have experienced homelessness, these passionate book lovers earn a modest income by selling books at various locations across Durban.

According to the Northglen News, "To hit the 25,000 mark, Durban’s 20 Street Lit booksellers must sell an average of 20 books per day, five days a week."

The booksellers have something for everyone – thrillers, romance, children’s books, cookbooks, self-help guides, dictionaries, Bibles, and more. If you take a closer look, you might just uncover a hidden gem among the carefully stacked titles on their tables.

You can support the cause by buying a book from a StreetLit bookseller at La Lucia Mall or Pick n Pay Hyper by the Sea.

Donations are always welcome, so if you have a book to pass on, please bring it along.
