Car accidents don't just happen because of speeding

A video shared on social media shows that speed isn’t always to blame for accidents, which is why staying alert behind the wheel is so important.

As we head into the Easter holidays – a time for family, reflection, and togetherness – it’s also important to recognise the risks that come with it.

Each year, this season sees a rise in road accidents. Speeding, reckless driving, and ignoring the rules put lives at risk.

That’s why the Department of Transport continues to remind motorists and passengers to stay safe by buckling up, not drinking and driving, sticking to the speed limit, and using a designated driver or private transport service where possible.

Speed is often the cause of fatal crashes, but it’s not the only one. Being tired or distracted can be just as dangerous.

A video shared on the Arrive Alive Instagram page is a reminder that speed isn’t always the problem.

In the clip, a double-cab bakkie turns onto Che Guevara Road in Durban. But mid-turn, something goes wrong and the vehicle crashes into a nearby light pole.

We don’t know exactly what happened. It could have been a medical emergency or the driver’s attention may have been elsewhere.

If it were a medical issue, we’re grateful it didn’t end worse than it was. But if the cause was distraction, like using a phone, this should be a serious wake-up call for all drivers.

You might be a skilled driver but if you’re not fully alert, things can go wrong in an instant.
