Captain Londy Ngcobo dares women to assume captaincy of their lives
Updated | By East Coast Radio
“I chose not to be
Rose from the Titanic, I chose to Captain the Titanic" - Captain Londy Ngcobo.
Today, Carol Ofori celebrates a special woman who has risen in the world of maritime in Africa and the world over.
Captain Londy Ngcobo, a Ship Navigator and Africa’s First Female Dredge Master, is passionate about unlocking Africa’s ocean economy. She has over 15 years of experience in the maritime industry.
"Her background includes Maritime Studies, former ship navigational officer for the largest container shipping company - Maersk, Advanced dredging from the Netherlands IHC, an industry-shaking role as a former Executive Maritime Compliance Manager for the largest logistics company in South Africa, now she is a Chief Executive of Womaritime Experts and Founder of Global Maritime Youth, all of which continues to echo her well-known title, 'The BLACKMERMAID'."
Captain Londy is not only an inspiring woman who is breaking the gender stereotypes in the male-dominated International Maritime Organization (IMO), she is also the founder of Global Maritime Youth.
This is a Non-Profit Organisation that focuses on cultivating pure love for the ocean and fostering skills supply and demand through global collaborations.
We love how in her Forbes Leading Women Africa speech she said: “I chose not to be Rose from the Titanic, I chose to Captain the Titanic”.

Her inspiration isn't only secluded to the ocean, but also includes women and the youth.
She often says that she may be Africa’s First Female Dredge Master, but she certainly won't be the last.
Captain Londy dared to dream
big and became a ship Captain and therefore she dares "women to thrive and assume
captaincy of their lives."
