Bride-to-be asks if eloping to avoid her mother-in-law is fair
Updated | By East Coast Radio
This has got to be the worst kind of mindset to have when going into a marriage...
Why? Because when you marry someone, you marry their family as well.
It's like a buy one, get the family special. However, it's not always as bad as the stereotype permits. In fact, there are those couples who have struck it lucky and have great relationships with their in-laws.

Unfortunately, that was not the case with this story.
The story was shared on Reddit by a bride-to-be who asked if she was the ###hole for wanting to elope so she didn't have to deal with her future mother-in-law.
We've all been privy to a strained relationship between the mother of the groom and the future bride at some point or another, but it seems this bride is ready to call it quits and run.
"AITA for not wanting to confront MIL and for cancelling the wedding?" (Reddit)
"MIL has never tried to have a positive relationship with me. She makes sure I’m not included in conversations, belittles my achievements & talks down to me." (Reddit)
Now, usually in these sorts of situations, we see a break in the bond between the couple because of this unlikely behaviour from the mother of the groom, but this couple was different.
The fiance supported his future wife by having a chat with his mother, which revealed that she did not like his future bride. He went as far as telling his mother that he would no longer speak with her if she continued with this behaviour.

The bride-to-be attempted to speak with her future mother-in-law (MIL) to smooth things over, but her MIL did not take her up on her invite.
The mother-in-law has made several attempts to discredit the bride amongst the family, which even led to people in the family ostracising the bride-to-be.
It has now come to the point where her fiance has asked her to try to talk it out with her future mother-in-law as one last attempt at smoothing things over. Otherwise, he wants to cancel the wedding and elope. She doesn't want to and sought help from Redditors.
"NTA. But is this what you want? Since your fiance backs you, why can't you have a wedding (IF that's what you two want) and just not invite his mom and other people? You two still deserve to be celebrated and I sure AF wouldn't give up a day I wanted because of her."
"Speaking from experience. MIL will never change. Choose the life you and fiance want to live. Dont choose to live based on what will appease someone who will never like you."
"Protectiveness isn’t just an attribute of comic book heroes. It’s laying down the law on relatives who harass or hate a man’s wife. A man who protects like that is sexy as hell."
