We use our Appreciation Monday post to say thank you to those teachers that made us realise our potential...
Teachers are sometimes forgotten, especially in this day and age, when everything is so stressful when it comes to teaching during COVID-19 and also being able to remain positive, encouraging and inspiring with your students.
We can't imagine it is an easy task under normal circumstances, but with all the added elements of stress it can be challenging. This Appreciation Monday we got inspired to remember those teachers that made us believe in our goals.
Principal Barry Wilson who has been a teacher for 36 years, will be retiring at the end of this year from the Durban Preparatory High School.
"Barry Wilson, who is the only DPHS “old boy” in the school’s proud 111-year history to hold the position of principal (and there have been 12 principals) " shared his passion around teaching and education, and how the right approach can build a strong foundation for any child’s future." (IOL)
As a DHS (Durban High School) old boy, when I was at high school there was a teacher of a subject I wasn’t very good at, but he still made the lessons so warm and encouraging, it inspired me to go into education.- Barry Wilson
I feel I left as a son of DPHS and returned as a dad of the DPHS family. My reward has been to help mould the dreams and lifestyles of individuals, whether it’s the children, coaches or staff. Many of our ‘old boys’ have achieved in business, sport or culture at the highest level and my reward has been playing a part in the chapter of each journey.- Barry Wilson
We think back to our school days and there are some stories that we all wish we could leave behind, whether that was because of a bully or a mean teacher or a subject that you just didn't like.
But many people have had experiences where they have had that one teacher who believed in them and some even say it is because of that one teacher that they have achieved all that they have. We definitely think that Mr. Wilson has been that one teacher for many students.
We reached out to Mr. Wilson and he shared some beautiful words with us. We know that his name is known by many parents in Durban and surrounds but his true humble nature came through when we called to chat to him and he was absolutely astonished that we wanted to feature a story on him and his passion for teaching.
Wilson said his advice to young teachers would be “to approach each day knowing that you are going to make an ordinary day into an extraordinary day for somebody. Those extra moments will fulfil your inner sense of purpose, satisfaction and happiness." (IOL)
We hope that Mr. Wilson's story can provide you with some motivation, as we deal with the stresses of life and everything that comes with that, we see good people leading our children and inspiring other teachers to do the same.
