6 tips for staying safe during a flash flood
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
The flash floods around KwaZulu-Natal should not be taken lightly. Here are some tips for preparing and staying safe in the event of a flash flood.

Families across KwaZulu-Natal have been feeling fearful and anxious as the recent unpredictable rainfall has swept through our province.
Beyond the structural damage caused by the heavy downpours, the loss of life and emotional toll of the flash floods have been devastating. Many communities have been left without the security of a home, while others have suffered significant property loss.
This weekend, several roads across Durban were flooded, with vehicles left submerged beneath murky floodwaters.

Here are six essential safety tips to help you stay prepared and respond effectively to flash flood emergencies:
1. Stay informed
Keep an eye on weather updates, flood warnings, and emergency alerts. Know whether your area is at risk of flooding.
2. Be ready to evacuate
If local authorities issue an evacuation order, leave immediately and follow emergency procedures. Have a family and community evacuation plan in place, identifying safe routes and meeting points.
3. Find higher ground
During a flash flood, move to the highest point of your home or neighbourhood as quickly as possible.
4. Avoid power lines
Stay clear of fallen electrical wires and power lines, as they may still be live and dangerous.
5. Protect your valuables
Keep your valuables on the higher levels of your home and, if possible, secure them in a waterproof safe. Review your insurance policy to ensure you're covered for flood damage.
6. Create an emergency kit
Pack essentials like non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, important documents (IDs, passports and birth certificates), and a battery-powered torch or light.
