East Coast Radio honours TKZee on Halloween’s 20th anniversary
Updated | By East Coast Radio
East Coast Radio releases its video of an exclusive roundtable discussion with TKZee on October 26, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their iconic kwaito album, Halloween.
In an exclusive in-depth conversation, East Coast Radio presenters Thandolwethu and Bongani Mtolo talk to TKZee’s Zwai Bala and honorary member Sbu MaLawyer. They uncover the significance of the album which sound-tracked South Africa’s post-1994 era.
In 1998 TKZee released Halloween, their first full album, which became a huge success with hit singles ‘Dlala Mapansula’, ‘Mambotjie’ and ‘We Love This Place’. Twenty years later, with over 200 000 records sold and 4 SAMA’s, Halloween is a landmark in South African music.
The two industry greats open up during the roundtable discussion about their music, inspiration as well the legacy and the place TKZee holds in the hearts of music-lovers. Zwai and Sbu also speak candidly about the highs and lows of the music industry and adjusting to fame as young musicians.
Bongani and Thandolwethu reminisce with Zwai and Sbu, sharing their TKZee memories. Bongani recalled the South African Music Awards following Halloween where the group were on and off stage. While Thandolwethu says she remembers when ‘Take it Easy’ was released, “Everybody was saying that it was an album that was way before it’s time, with a sound so different.”
The full roundtable will be available for streaming on the East Coast Radio website on Friday this week. You can also tune in to a special tribute show on East Coast Urban on Thursday 25th of October between 6pm-7pm, for some of TKZee’s greatest hits and both fans and artist most memorable TKZee moments.
