Wicked, wild with a touch of braai

Wicked, wild with a touch of braai

Thank you for your love, Richards Bay! See the highlights from this morning's broadcast here.

After an epic broadcast in Pietermaritzburg, Darren Maule and the East Coast Radio Breakfast Tour team blazed onto the North Coast of KZN yesterday afternoon, with 35 bikers leading the way from Empangeni to Richards Bay!

This morning, the team set up on the dock of the Richards Bay harbour for their live three-hour broadcast.

And what an eventful show it was!

The District Mayor of Uthungulu, Thembeka Mchunu, cleared her diary to come say hi to Darren, Natarah Nadesan and the team. And so did scores of others who visited the Waterfront throughout the morning to show the guys some love.

Nineteen-year-old Heidi Dalton, who flies out to Scotland tomorrow to represent SA in the Commonwealth Games, also dropped in. David Savides, the editor of Zululand Observer, regaled the team with a few wild local stories.

And speaking of wild, stunt Guy, K-K-K-Kevin, teamed up with local jet ski master, Tyron Motzouris, for a never-before-attempted stunt in South Africa. Armed with his trademark sense of adventure (and blue Speedo), Kevin bravely took on the challenge of attempting a ten metre high jet ski flip. In the end, they didn’t set a new world record but they did go as high as five metres - or as Tyron put it, “We went high enough to hear Kevin screaming!”

The Kids' Grand Challenge contestant this morning scored an impressive 9/10. It was Grantleigh Preparatory School pupil Cheneille Hall’s first time on radio. “I felt a bit nervous in the beginning, but Darren and Natarah were so friendly I immediately felt at ease,” the 11-year-old said afterwards.

That wasn’t the only challenge that went down in Richards Bay this morning. In fact, things got pretty heated during Darren’s quest to find the Ultimate Richards Bay Best Braai Master. Three teams battled it out for the title: Richards Braai (headed by James Landsberg). Shine Bright Like A Braai Man (Biren and Shainal Ramchuran) and The Ninjas (led by Chene Du Plessis).

After much finger-licking, taste bud-taunting and smacking of lips, judges Darren, Natarah, Gabriel and Kevin, together with celebrity judge Dawn Dunn, crowned husband-and-wife team Shine Bright Like A Braai Man the winner!  Biren and Shainal took home R3000, courtesy of RBCT Charity fun. The runners-up each won R1000.

Now, no East Coast Breakfast broadcast is complete without a bit of live song and dance and this morning’s performance was thankfully not from Darren but from the pupils of Birdswood Secondary School.

This is the second choir in as many days to showcase their talent on the tour. Yesterday, world champs - Kearsney College Choir – gave a rousing performance outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall.

The East Coast Radio Breakfast tour takes a break over the weekend but they’re back for day 7 on Monday, heading to Eshowe to spread some love before wrapping up the epic tour on Tuesday, 29 July in Florida Road, Durban!
