VIDEO: Man attempts to float 1700km

He was warned by the US Coastguard of the dangers he faced, but he was determined to make a go of it. Iranian exile, Reza Baluchi attempted the impossible: to float 1700 kilometres in an inflatable bubble.

Baluchi attempted to float from Florida to Bermuda, but was eventually rescued three days into his mission, suffering from fatigue and disorientation.

US coastguards warned Baluchi on Wednesday, suggesting he give up, but he was determined, and insisted he had trained for his quest.

He activated his locator beacon on Saturday, calling for help.

Baluchi's inflatable hydro-pod bubble is made of 3mm-thick plastic.

He propelled it by running inside like a hamster on a wheel.

A statement on Baluchi's website said he had planned to raise money "for children in need" and "to inspire those who have lost hope".

Baluchi is no stranger to news headlines. He previously spent seven years on a bike trip across 55 countries and six continents.

What are your thoughts on missions such as these? Do you think it is sensible / heroic to risk your life to raise money for charity or are there perhaps other ways to do raise money or awareness?
