Red light to the Kloof green lights
Updated | By tanstan fourie

Last year I brought us the story of the Kloof street patrollers, a group of residents who took it upon themselves to try and help reduce he crime rate in the area by simply raising visibility.
They fitted out their cars with flashing green lights to identify themselves to the Kloof residents and also serve as a warning to criminals that they were being watched.
But Corne Broodryk, chairman of the Kloof Policing Forum and founder of the street patrollers, said they ran into problems with the Metro Police who were fining them for “illegally using green lights”. And the efforts of the street patrollers seemed to be thwarted by bureaucracy.
At the time Metro spokesperson Senior Superintendant, Eugene Msomi said the street patrollers were contravening the law by using a green light, which is meant to be for disaster management and civil disobedience. And therefore they were subject to the same penalties as anyone else who breaks this same law.
Almost a year later, has anything changed?
Take a listen...
Do you think the green light street patrollers should face fines?
