Moment of Madness visits Durban Day
Updated | By Jason
So Durban day was cool.
No seriously. It was like 89km an hour wind cool. For the first half hour.
I got to Durban Day nice and early to watch people come in and get settled on their patches of grass - let me tell you, there is nothing more interesting than watching a group of 20 somethings pick out a piece of prime grade grass to sit on.
You would swear that they were looking to move home the way the ground analysis was being performed...That being said - when I found my piece of grass I did the usual four-point check, namely: How far from the stage am I? How far from the toilets am I? How far from the beer tent am I? And vitally important - how tall/wide/annoying is the person in front of me?
Once I had established that all was well, my friends and I settled down for an afternoon of fun and music. And random slaps of sunshine.
I sat next to this one guy - I'm gonna call him Bad Luck Brian. The guy had the worst luck in the world. First he spills his own drink on himself, then my mate gets up to dance and spills his drink on Brian, then Brian's mate spills her drink on him while trying to shake my hand. By the end of it Bad Luck Brian just sat down, mouth open, asking people to aim straight.
I made a few observations of a couple of groups that attended Durban Day this year.
The fist pumpers - so angry at the sky that they try to punch it for a good three or four songs, the mellowsters - who were so chilled out, people were leaving their drinks next to them to chill, and the hardcore followers - who had names, dates, shirts and ideas of friendship with bands that even I found a little creepy (one kid said he couldn't wait to get Toya to play at his 16th birthday, so I asked him when did she confirm - he said, in the creepiest voice EVER - "She hasn't....yet"). Yeah, about that restraining order...
I have a mate who I have to give credit to. As we arrived we all played weather professional and gave our uneducated opinion on "what the weather was going to do today" - as we always do (don't act like you don't!) and he said, and again, I kid you not, "by 4pm the wind will be gone, by 9pm there will be rain." Lo and behold at 4pm the wind was non existant and at 9pm it began drizzling. Well played dude, well played.
I of course lost 50 bucks somewhere, my photographs came out all fuzzy and I got a weird headache. But the concert rocked.
Great performances - Got to love Zakes - such an animated guy. Loved the pyro and smoke that Goldfish had going (much to my disappointment, they weren't actual goldfish, just ordinary people, bummer) and of course Prime circle rocked. I would dig them to have a song that was 3.17 minutes long - you know, because those are all prime numbers...No? Shaddup, I thought that was brilliant.
Anyway, here's to another successful Durban Day - I hope next year Bad Luck Brian brings an umbrella, not for the rain, but for the beer.
Till next time,
Take care
