The man who taught South Africa maths

Everyone remembers William Smith, the Maths teacher who helped many South Africans get through high school maths. The East Coast Breakfast team managed to track him down and got to chat to the maths legend about things other than maths.

Last week Thursday Darren and Natarah decided to post the coolest #ThrowBackThursday picture on our Facebook page.

They posted a picture of William Smith, the man who produced the world's first live interactive TV education broadcasts back in 1990.

Learners would phone in and take part in their maths and science problems being solved while they watched the Liberty Life Learning Channel on their screens.

The comments and interaction on this Facebook post blew the team away!

People were sharing their amazing stories about what huge impact Mr Smith made on their lives.

“Without this man, I would never have passed maths & Science in matric 87. A legend.’ says Andrew Dickson

“The master of maths, truly a brilliant mind & a legend to maths pupils...” says Avinash Gangaram

“More than a Maths genius Love him” says Nomntu Salmani Mamqocwa Kameni

“I used to watch him when I was doing my matric and he did play a role because I passed maths. He is indeed a legend.” Says Thobile Tk Ngubane

One of the comments that stood out to the team was the one made by Jessica Smith, Mr William Smith’s daughter.

Thanks to Jessica the East Coast Breakfast team were fortunate enough to arrange an exclusive interview with Mr Smith this morning who now lives in Australia.
