Father-Daughter Project
Updated | By tanstan fourie
I don't know if your kids surprise you on a Sunday morning with homework they 'might' need your help with and has to be ready for them to hand in on the Monday morning.
That's what happened to me as I was sitting down to read the Sunday Times with a cup of coffee and some toast.
"Oh by the way Daddy, I need to make a 'Spring Hat' for school tomorrow."
What do you mean, a spring hat?
"Oh we must just source the materials for, design and build a hat that represents spring."
...and you need this by when?
'Tomorrow...'
So off to the shops we go on what was supposed to be a lazy Sunday to find what was needed to make a 'Spring Hat!'
Now as we were picking materials I was trying to guide my daughter towards choosing the stuff that would make up a hat like this one I saw on my Google search:
But my daughter is single minded of purpose and she had a clear idea in her little head about the colours she wanted, the flowers, the petals, the giant feathers and even the lumo-green Stetson style hat! I tried to dissuade her but she was adamant that this was the kind of Spring Hat she wanted.
And so after an afternoon of hurried glueing, cutting, fitting and pinning (this she did all on her own mind you - I supervised) this was the spring hat creation that she came up with:
You cannot begin to comprehend my relief and delight when she came home and told that there was a prize for the best hat and that that prize had been won by her and her hat.
The one she envisioned.
The one she built with her own two paws.
The one that I thought would maybe not quite have met the specifications.
My little girl's creation was the best in the class. My little over-achiever.
