Datsun making a comeback

I am actually super excited by the fact than Nissan is bringing back the Datsun.

I am actually super excited by the fact than Nissan is bringing back the Datsun.

I don't know why I am so excited about the Datsun, I don't know if it’s because I sort of live in the past that I love it or if my memory – yes, that’s it – my memory!!  You remember things from the past and your memory always makes things seem more pleasant or more exciting than perhaps the actual instances were.

The reason I am talking about this is because my Mother owned a Datsun 120 y and it was brown and it was the bane of my existence.  You see  she would come and pick us up from boarding school - in the brown Datsun 120 y called The Brown Cow – and I would hide (I would literally hide).  I would say to my Mum “No, you can’t come and pick me up outside the school.  I will walk 3 blocks away from the school and you can pick me up around the corner there by Mr Chippies”.

I was so embarrassed, I mean I don’t know why I would rather she came and picked me up in my Uncle’s yellow 3litre Ford Cortina which – back then- was quite a cool car or our Ford Escort XR6 which was also back then a very cool car, but NO!, my Mother would insist on picking me up from boarding school in front of all the boys and girls – actually it wasn’t even from school!  We had to catch the train to Jhb Station and there you would have several boarding school kids parking there from Potch Boys, Potch Girls, Gimmies, Tegnies etc. so, all my peers were there and their parents would be arriving in Beemers, Mercs, Jags  and the occasional Rolls Royce would pull up in those days I’ll have you know  and then my Mum would arrive in the Brown Cow – the Datsun 120y.

Now, the thing about this car is it also never died!  This also upset me!  I would try and let the tyres down or remove the spark plugs or damage the fan belt just to make sure this car was not in working order for my Mother to embarrass me with it, but it never ever died.  So much so that my older brother “stole” the car one night when my folks were out and actually rolled it.  It landed back on it’s wheels, he drove the car back home, put it back in the parking space.  The car was still in 100% working order – just a couple of dings and scratches and dents which were fixeable and were promptly fixed just in time for my Mother to pick me up after a huge sporting event in the Datsun 120y.

So – when I hear that Nissan is bringing back the Datsun – I am befuddled that I am so excited by this!  Back then I hated it, now best thing ever!!
