The bachelor's guide to saving water
Updated | By tanstan fourie
1. Make sure the dishwasher is FULL before using it. Dishwashers use on average 35 litres of water per load. I’m lucky because I don’t mind using paper plates and I also don’t mind eating with my hands – except for soup…
2. If you lick your plate or bowl clean you will need less water to clean it too.
3. Same with the washing machine… (Uses 150 litres). Only wash when it’s a full load but you can also wear your clothes more than once, you know! I only put my clothes in the wash after I’ve spilled on them two or three times. Normally after eating soup.
4. Use a bowl of water to clean fruits and vegetables rather than running water over them. Then wipe them off with the shirt that you’re about to put in the wash.
5. Re-use the water in that bowl to water your houseplants or to fill the water pistol you use to squirt at the Vervet monkeys trying to steal your fruit.
6. Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run cold every time you want a glass of water. (Try not to mix monkey water with human water)
7. In the bathroom: almost two-thirds of home water use is for toilet flushing and bathing! So do your No 2’s at work.
8. DON'T BATH. NO! Not, like, ever! Rather shower.
9. DO take shorter showers and save 16 litres of water a minute. So sing shorter songs in the shower… No Pink Floyd or Jimi Hendrix (Also don’t sing Chris Brown ‘coz it makes you feel dirty and forces you to clean yourself more…)
10. Always remember this rhyme when it comes to the toilet:
“If it’s yellow, let it mellow.
If it’s brown, flush it down.”
NB - Never put water down a drain that can be used for something else such as watering a garden or cleaning.
