Winning start for Jordy in Portugal
Jordy Smith has won his first round heat at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
The Durban surfer defeated Bede Durbridge and Federico Morais at Peniche on Wednesday.
Travis Logie ended second in a first round heat won by Taj Burrow.
Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning also settled for second in their respetive first round outings in Portugal today.
Fanning tops the world championship standings, while Slater is second and Smith third.
Logie is 21st.
The win today guarantees Smith a spot in the third round in Portugal.
Logie, Slater and Fanning will all have to surf in the second round.
Logie will face Adam Melling.
