WATCH - King mackerel fishing
Updated | By Andre Bloem
King mackerel is one of the main fish species targeted by recreational anglers off the KwaZulu-Natal coast. These fish are also known as couta here in KZN.

The largest couta I know of weighed 42kg and was caught off Mtwalume on the KZN south coast.
I have tried many times to catch a king mackerel and somehow have never managed to do so.
These fish are mostly caught off ski-boats, jet-skis and kayaks.
I also know of some caught off South Pier in Durban.
King mackerel are not unique to KZN waters with these fish also found off Florida in the USA.

There the couta is known as kingfish and today we see Captain Blair Wiggins fishing for this speedy predator.
