Springbok director of rugby Rassie Erasmus explains what the ‘bomb squad’ is and how it came about after a social media storm on Friday night.
East Coast Radio’s Gareth Jenkinson is in Japan covering the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup campaign and managed to ask Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus to explain how the ‘bomb squad’ group came about and what happened on Friday night.
Watch below:
The incident created a social media storm over the weekend after a video did the rounds after the Springboks’ 49-3 win over Italy.
Immediately after the match, while both teams were shaking hands, Springbok wing Makazole Mapimpi walked towards the group of Springbok reserves that had got together in the huddle.
In the video, Mapimpi stops and turns away as the group does what looks like a war cry before breaking apart.

A number of Twitter users alleged that the incident was racially driven, even after Mapimpi released his own statement in a video on Instagram on Saturday.
