KZN deep sea anglers have been cashing in on the flatter oceans and reduced wind over the past week.

North: Anglers as far as Kosi and Mapelane have experienced good fishing not only for edible game, but for billfish too. Some exceptional catches of dorado, couta and tuna have been recorded in the deep, clean water as well.

Durban: Over the last few years, Durban has never been a wahoo paradise, as most fish pass through in the deep and move into shallower water at Aliwal Shoal and Shelley Beach. Over the last month and the last week in particular there have been an unusual amount of wahoo landed not only deep, but around the anchored ships. Some boats doing as well as 2 and 3 in one launch. Many an angler targeting tuna on Kingfisher Rattlers with no steel trace have been bitten off due to this increase in wahoo numbers. To have the best of both worlds, try add a short (40cm) length of number 7 American Fishing wire to the front of all diving lures to ensure a better landing rate. Snoek seem to have really come alive over the last week, with target areas mainly further north at Tinley, Seabell and Westbrook. Three couta over 10kgs were landed on snoek traces recently as well, which is a good indication as to what is in store for us over the next few weeks.

Sunfoil Dolphins head coach, Lance Klusener, enjoyed success off Blythedale Beach yesterday.

He caught two couta and went on to celebrate a Ram Slam T20 victory later in the day.
