This fish sometimes follow skates in a bid to share meals.
Prodigal son can reach up to 2m in length and are believed to reach a maximum weight of around 68kg.
They generally feed on squid, crabs and other fish.
Prodigal son are prized by both humans and mako sharks for their firm and tasty meat and these fish seem not to be afraid of swimming near boats.
I have seen prodigal son caught off North Pier in Durban and have also seen a photo of a 34kg specimen shot by a diver off Brighton Beach on the Bluff.
