VIDEO: KZN south coast couta action
Updated | By Staff Writer

It was a king mackerel (also known as couta) that won the Quattro King of the Sea fishing contest on the KZN south coast last month.
The winning fish weighed around 31 kilograms and was one of several nice couta I spotted at the weigh-in spot at Pumula Beach.
Couta are fierce fighters and are armed with very sharp teeth.
This means you need to handle them with caution and that a steel trace is a good idea when targeting couta.
Couta are known as kingfish in some parts of the world.
They tend to feed well on live bait like shad, mullett and mackerel.
Most couta are caught off ski boats or kayaks, but I can remember several being landed off South Pier in Durban back in the day.
Our footage below was shot off the KZN south coast.
