VIDEO: Blue Lagoon snoek fishing

Queen mackerel is a favourite target species for many anglers here in KwaZulu-Natal.

These fish are also known as Natal snoek.

They can be caught both from boats and from the shore.

I have seen them landed in Durban harbour, off various Durban piers and have personally caught several from a ski boat.

I used Clark spoons, but Natal snoek are also fond of sardine fillet.

Last year I saw a photo of a big one caught on shrimp in the harbour - not a common scenario.

When using a spoon to target queen mackerel, it is generally best to retrieve the spoon as fast as possible.

Alain Tardin and I tried fillets off Blue Lagoon earlier this year, but only managed to hook a small shad.

Blue Lagoon and the stretch of ocean at Hyper-by-the-Sea are both popular spots for Natal snoek.

Our footage below was shot on that stretch of water.

The lucky angler ends up landing three Natal snoek.

Brad Arthur from Freespool caught a nice yellowfin tuna off Umdloti yesterday.

Richard Chivers from Nikao Fishing Adventures was also in touch with us this week and told us about a 40kg wahoo caught at Aliwal Shoal.

Alain and I are determined to get back on the ocean and share a new fishing video with you soon...

Feel free to send us your fishing news, photos and footage.
