The prodigal son is a fish also known to some as cobia and is famous for both great fighting and great eating.

These fish can reach two metres in length and can weigh up to about 78 kilograms.

You can see some fine specimens at uShaka Marine World here in Durban.

The biggest cobia I have seen in the wild weighed 34 kilograms and was shot by a spear-fisherman off the Bluff.

Prodigal son are closely related to the remora - a fish often seen in the company of large sharks.

Cobia are both hunters and scavengers.

They have been seen following sharks, turtles and manta rays in pursuit of scraps.

Cobia show little fear of boats.

Mako sharks are known to feed on adult cobia.

Our footage today shows Captain Blair Wiggins chasing cobia with artificial eel as bait.
