Underberg area fishing well
Updated | By Staff Writer
Dams in and around Underberg and Himeville are fishing very well.
These dams have big populations of minnows and resident Trout and Bass gorge themselves on this food source.
Any fly imitation which resembles a minnow, such as a Hamills Killer or Mrs Simpson, will produce a bite. Some favorites have been the Kerts Baby Minnow, Muddlers with white Marabou and even Wooly Buggers.
All of our local dams are still producing Bass, mainly on top water lures. The winners have been Strike Pros - Thai Stick and Gobi Popper.
The Thai Stick can be fished faster with more action and the Gobi Popper is for more turbulent water with a chop. This lure makes more commotion in the water. With the rains staining the waters, darker lures should be used.
Albert Falls has produced some good fish over the last week on Zoom's Super Fluke in black and June bug and Midmar has had some decent fishing with three good Bass over 3kgs.
Hazelmere Dam saw many anglers and many fish - from the boat and the shore.
Winter is on its way and it is time to start stocking up on bait if you want that trophy Carp. Some quality baits to try out would be the Marukyu range of feed and Kook baits. These guys have been producing the goods for our local anglers and have been very successful worldwide. Many of our dams have fished well over the last week with these products, mainly Shongweni and Midmar. Another additive which saw a good increase in bite rate was Super Casts "Super Goo'd" in the White chocolate flavour.
Vary your depth at this time of year as the Carp will be moving onto deeper water, don't be scared to fish deep. Many anglers do not have the time to feed spot days in advance, so make sure when fishing deep that sufficient feed is used, this will increase the chances of a fish being on your swim and near your bait.
