Top hockey in Durban North
Updated | By Staff Writer
Sponsored by Belgotex for the next three years, this is the country’s only national, non-tertiary, inter-club hockey tournament and will in future be known as the Greenfields/Riverside Elite Club Challenge.
This year spectators can expect to see some world-class, action-packed matches as South Africa’s premier teams battle it out for the title.
The teams will showcase many of the country’s top players who have just participated in the Hockey World Cup in Holland, among them Riverside Hockey Club’s local international stars Gowan Jones, Taine Paton and Tim Drummond.
South Africa’s leading hockey teams will be in attendance including last year’s runners-up, Wanderers from Gauteng, the Western Province CC and current titleholders, Riverside Hockey Club.
Kearsney, who along with Riverside Hockey Club are the two strongest non-tertiary club teams in KwaZulu-Natal, will fill the fourth slot.
This year’s players can be confident that they will be able to show off their skills on world-class surfaces courtesy of new sponsor Belgotex, who are the manufacturers of Greenfields Hockey Surfaces, the choice surface at this year’s World Cup.
Riverside Hockey Chairman, Wayne Phillips, expects great things from this year’s event: “All the visiting teams from other provinces involved in this year’s challenge field international players and are current league champions in their provinces. We have no doubt that this tournament will provide some thrilling hockey entertainment."
An additional attraction to this year’s Elite Club Challenge are mini games for both Riverside’s mini hockey youngsters aged under 12 and those players aged 12 to 15 who are part of the club’s Reach Programme sponsored by Varsity College. It provides talented players with a high performance training environment in which to hone their skills.
