Top cricketer to coach at Maritzburg College

Maritzburg College will soon be welcoming top cricketer, Michael Smith, to the position of Director of Cricket at the school.

Smith, who hails from the Eastern Cape, has played for teams such as the Border Cricket Academy, Border, Eastern Province and the Chevrolet Warriors as well as representing South Africa at the Hong Kong Sixes Tournament.
Smith made his 1st Class debut in October 2003 and has played 89 1st class, 72 list ‘A’ one day and 16 T20 matches.

He has also captained the Eastern Province team in more than 45 1st class matches and in just short of 50 one-day matches. He also captained the Chevrolet Warriors team.
Smith boasts a personal tally of just short of 5000 1st class runs and just under 2000 one-day runs in his career with nine hundreds and 40 fifties.

For the past eleven years, Smith has been playing professional cricket and coaching in various parts of the United Kingdom.
Smith has owned and operated a Cricket Academy and has been involved in cricket coaching at many different levels and obtained his Level 3 Coaching Qualification through Cricket South Africa in 2012.
Since 2012, Smith has represented Middleton Cricket Club in England as a Professional cricket player and coach. He has also acted as coaching consultant for Eastern Province Cricket where he worked with the Junior Elite squads (U13, U15, U17, U19), as well as assisting with the Eastern Province Men’s Cricket team. In conjunction with this, Smith was involved with the Coaching Acceleration Program within the franchise.
Smith will take up his position on 12 August.
