Titans change for Dolphins
Updated | By Michael Owen-Smith
The top-of-the-table Unlimited Titans are in town this week as the Sunfoil Dolphins aim to build on their upturn in form when they face the log leaders at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban from Thursday.
The KwaZulu-Natal franchise secured one of their more impressive performances of the season when they crushed the Warriors by an innings and 54 runs in East London last week.
That has reignited their title chances and victory over the visitors will go a long way towards throwing the championship race open.
“I'm not saying we’re going to beat the Titans, but we’re capable of beating them if we play the type of cricket we’re capable of playing,” said Dolphins coach Roger Telemachus. “We have the ability to beat them, I have no doubt about that.”
The Titans lead the table by just under four points from the bizhub Highveld Lions, with the Dolphins in fourth position, almost 30 points adrift. The VKB Knights are sandwiched in between marginally ahead of the Durbanites.
But with home fixtures against the top three still to come, there is hope for the Dolphins.
The Titans, meanwhile, who presently look like they are in a two-horse race with the Lions, face their Jukskei rivals in the coming weeks, but coach Rob Walter believes plenty needs to be done between now and then.
“It kind of feels like it (the title) is going to be decided that way, but there’s plenty of cricket to be played before that,” he said. “We can’t afford to ignore the other teams and think of that one in a few weeks. We have two games before that, starting with this week against the Dolphins. They will be confident after their win, so it should be a good game. They’ve now got a sniff again and I have no doubt they’ll come out firing.”
While the Dolphins eased to victory at Buffalo Park, the Titans smashed the Knights by 359 runs in their last game at SuperSport Park.
“It’s only the second game of this second round, so there’s a long way to go,” Walter added. “We’re happy to have started well with that win and stayed ahead of the pack. In saying that, there’s only four points between us and the Lions, so there’s a lot of work to do.”
The Titans have added Tabraiz Shamsi and Albie Morkel to their squad for the trip to Durban.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, have drafted in Jonathan Vandiar, who is expected to open in place of Imraan Khan, due to a skin problem.
Tshepang Dithole is also named in the squad ahead of Calvin Savage.
