Tinkler heading back to Cape Town City
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Seasoned coach Eric Tinkler will take up the role of head coach of Cape Town City and will start with immediate effect.
The 50 year-old former Bafana Bafana defender has been without a club since he was sacked by Maritzburg United at the end of 2020 and will start a second stint at the Cape Town club.
This decision came after the club parted ways permanently with Jan Olde Riekerink last week following a period of administrative leave.
"Cape Town City is delighted to confirm the appointment of Eric Tinkler as new first team head coach on a four-year contract. The history maker officially returns to the Mother City!” the club said via their Twitter page.
For Tinkler, it’s about returning to the place where it all started for him ahead of a journey where he hopes to take the club to new heights.
"This has always been one of my favourite stadiums, I was part of the beginnings of the club, its first season and it ended up being a fantastic season," he said via a video on the club's Twitter page.
"That will always stay in memory for a very long time. Now obviously the task has to be greater.”
Tinkler had a successful first stint with the Citizens when he led them to the Telkom Knock-Out before stints with SuperSport United, Chippa United and most recently Maritzburg United.
His first job will be the final two matches of the current DSTV Premiership campaign where they face Black Leopards and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
