Team Europe strip Stenson of Ryder Cup captaincy
Sweden’s Henrik Stenson has been stripped of the Ryder Cup
captaincy after he became one of the latest players to jump ship to the Saudi-backed
LIV Golf Series.
Stenson, who is a five-time Ryder Cup player for Europe, will now relinquish his honour of leading Europe next year in Rome after both Team Europe and Team USA agreed that they would not pick players that have moved to the controversial new league.
In a statement from earlier today, the Ryder Cup explained that the decision made by Stenson meant that they had no choice.

"In light of decisions made by Henrik in relation to his personal circumstances, it has become clear that he will not be able to fulfil certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe that he had committed to prior to his announcement as Captain on Tuesday March 15, 2022, and it is therefore not possible for him to continue in the role of Captain," the statement on the Ryder Cup website said.
"Confirmation of the new 2023 European Ryder Cup Captain will be made in due course. Ryder Cup Europe will be making no further comment on any aspect of the process until that time."
This most recent announcement casts a shadow on Team Europe who have already lost the likes of Ryder Cup veterans Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Series.
Despite the above players not necessarily being a part of the playing team, there would have been more than just cause to include all as vice captains, however now Team Europe will be looking elsewhere for their management team.
