Superb shad fishing at Virginia
Updated | By Andre Bloem and Kingfisher
We have been told of very good shad fishing at Virginia over the past week.
There have been extremely good catches of shad on Japanese mackerel and sardine in the mornings and early evenings at Virginia and Blue Lagoon.
The presence of these shad has created easy pickings for the garrick. Keep an eye out for larger shad and garrick in this area.
There have been a few kob off the north bank at Blue Lagoon in the mornings and evenings. These are being caught on McArthy paddletails and also shad baits. Thousands of peckers attack many of the baits being thrown in hope of hooking into blue rays and grey sharks off Durban. The main culprits being eeltail barbel and maasbanker.
Some very good sized shad were caught around the Addington stretch at night during the week. Smaller grunter and stumpnose have been landed closer to North Pier on cracker shrimp and sardine baits.
A somewhat quiet week has passed for the anglers on the Bluff, despite the amount of karanteen and shad in the area.
A reminder that the The Kingfisher’s “Biggest Shad Competition” finishes this month.
The heaviest shad for September will receive a Daiwa SL 50SHK Reel, valued at R1625, the second heaviest shad will receive a 13’6” Kingfisher Coastline Medium, three piece, 4-6oz Graphite Rod, valued at R1145 and third heaviest shad will receive a Daiwa AG 6000 reel valued at R598.
Please note that all shad (fresh) must be weighed at either, The Kingfisher, 53 Hunter Street or Tackle Centre, Old Fort Road or The Fishing Tackle Shop, Warner Beach during trading hours.
Please remember there is a bag limit of four and the minimum size is 30cm and that the season closes 30 September and re-opens 1 December 2015.
Well done to all who weighed in shad so far for the September - the current standings are as follows:
1 - Carl Newman 5.58kg
2 - Nazeer Suleman 4.44kg
3 - Bryan Raddy 3.44kg
