Masandawana have opted to for current assistants Rhulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi to share the role as head coach of the club following Pitso Mosimane's exit last week.

The pair will act joint head coaches, while an official statement from the club has indicated that Mngqithi will have the overruling say if there is a lack of consensus around decisions for the team.

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Dr Patrice Motsepe said that the club wanted to ensure that it backs local coaches and reward their current coaching staff for helping the club during an era of unrivaled success.

"Manqoba and Rhulani have been with Mamelodi Sundowns for many years and were part of the technical team that were crowned champions of Africa in 2016 and have also won the Premier Soccer League and other titles in South Africa. The board of Mamelodi Sundowns was particularly keen to appoint South African coaches and express its commitment and confidence in the talent and ability of our local coaches," Motsepe said in a statement.

"Manqoba, Rhulani and the technical team at Sundowns will focus on defending the PSL and the other titles that we won during our historic 50-year anniversary. They will also advance and continue with the objective that we stated in 2004, which is to make Mamelodi Sundowns one of the best clubs on the African continent."

Sundowns will look to start a new chapter without Mosimane, who is joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly. There have been widespread reports that the  former Sundowns and Bafana Bafana coach was lured away by a lucrative contract which would see him earn in excess of R50mln a year.
